Enforcement of the Silvicultural Water Law – this is a civil law enforced by VDOF through the administrative processes act and is used when non-compliance is found with sediment entering streams or likely to enter streams. The process consists of informing the operators of issues, giving them an opportunity to correct, and then issuing orders if needed to correct followed by fines that can be levied against both the operator and the landowner after a formal conference has been held. www.dof.virginia.gov

Riparian Buffer Tax Credit – which is an application fee and process administered by VDOF where landowners can claim a tax credit for the value of timber left along a stream and not harvested in conjunction with a regular timber harvest over the adjoining area. The buffer claimed has to be maintained for 15 years, must be at least 35 feet wide but not greater than 300 feet, and at least 50% crown cover must remain following the harvest.
